Is it just me who feels gloomy and depressed after yet another Chat GPT announcement?
It feels like life is throwing you overboard. You continue to work by inertia on legacy code that was written very poorly. The company is not ready to use AI (idiots), life is passing by.
People don't realize what a Pandora's box we've opened. There's one last step left. In 5-10 years, we will saturate our world with external manipulators through which AI will be able to control the world.
A universal basic income is already being fully discussed by the elites, as the scale of “layoffs” becomes clearer. Millions of people will simply become useless soon.
As an engineer, I partly feel guilty about this. As a result, we, engineers, came up with a system that will eventually replace even us and we will become commodities in the next 10-15 years.
What do you HN community think about this?
But to be serious: the world is big, plenty of analog stuff to do, you have to unlearn, relearn, relocate, reconnect. Don't watch the news. Do it at your own pace. There are mellow death cults, accelerationist ones, AI assisted, MAGA ones, and you can ignore them all. You can still engineer more than whatever you want in 15 years and you'll feel AI as much as you felt those patches and upgrades to Kernel, OS, framework and your favorite languages. You have control.
