Why Do So Many Parents Think Kids Need Their Own Bedroom? (theatlantic.com)

Parents are more aware of the sexual developmental of their children.

I have heard many clients over the years talk of their first unwanted sexual experience with their siblings because they slept in the same bedroom.

Especially so when the family are living in squalid and cramped housing and the children have to share the same bed.

The lack of social housing increases this problem because families are stuck in poor unsuitable housing.

Here in Airstrip One, it is not illegal, but advised, that children older than 10 years of different sexes should not share a bedroom.

It is only a recommendation for those living in cramped poor quality housing and as a guide for what housing you are likely to be offered if you are considered living in an overcrowded environment.

The NSPCC consider that girls puberty begins at age 11 while boys puberty begins at 12 years of age.

In my experience as a play therapist and children and families therapist this is totally wrong!!

Girls in particular start their periods much earlier, some a young as 8 years old. This for me is the beginning of puberty and the law should recognise this.

I personally think that all children should have their own bedrooms.

This might be a modern thing since families are smaller, but for families with more than 2 or 3 children, they are definitely sharing a room.

Part of it might be so they don't have to worry about fights or arguments between siblings as often.
