I presume the author hasn't heard of the well-established, Open Source Zoneminder project, which has excellent camera and data management functionality in a self-hostable Linux environment.
Yes it's easy. M1 Mac Mini running SecuritySpy from Ben Software (https://bensoftware.com/securityspy/) with Amcrest Cameras. Really easy, but also not that cheap.
Been running that for 10 years (was an Intel Mini and other cameras before).
Call me old fashioned, I have security door and window locks.
I have home insurance.
I have all my personal stuff that I would prefer not to be stolen, like my will, in a fireproof safe bolted to the floor.
I dont need some idiotic, waste of time and money, home security system.
I dont want someone breaking into my home, but I am not going to fall into the trap of creating a fort knox environment to protect my old laptop and TV.
If I was a burglar, I would just wear a mask. Smash the front door in. Rush in, rip out the TV, laptops and anything valuable to hand and run off. JOB DONE!
Would I care if the security cameras could film me or ping the owner on his phone? NO!
Still, you could always invite the family over for the annual soiree and put on the "Our house was burgaled video".
