Ask HN: Laptop case that is robust but not fugly?

Hi all. Help me with a unicorn hunt: a crush-resistant laptop case that's not fugly! A Peli [0] is certainly robust but it's hardly a beauty, although it's cuter than some of the alternatives [1].

Requirements other than head-turn appeal would include a svelte profile that any 1990s runway model would envy, so it can nestle neatly in a backpack. As for other aesthetic considerations, I'm not fussed about the latest colourways, as long as it doesn't look like it should contain nuclear waste I'll give it a whirl.

Vital statistics: 14-15" x 0.8". Temperament: notebook that is creaking at the seams and needs a little TLC if it is to see out the year.

Is it a lost cause? Am I destined to embarrass the airbook-toting hipsters at my local cafe with my industrial luggage? Or are some of you travellers from laptop Nirvana?

What are you packing?

Moi? Fugly ain't so bad. Why? For the same reason no one steals fugly cars. For the same reason - in many but not all situations - it's not wise to keep your high-end camera in a high-end camera bag.

Fugly mitigates theft.

That said, I've been thinking about something that protects but can slide into a bag, backpack, briefcase, etc. My ideal case would also have thermal protection. As in I could leave it in the car for say an hour or two in the Winter and the hardware wouldn't get too cold.

Ooh good point. Aaaand now my list of requirements is even longer :(

Why does it need to be crush resistant?

Because I've lost one laptop (RIP) to a crack in a motherboard brought on by repeated squashing and twisting, and my current notebook is creaking. Quite literally. Although I probably should simply stop tossing my laptop into a backpack, that's just how life goes. So something that absorbs that stress would be ideal!

Computers are cattle, not pets. Good luck.

Ha! Love it. Thanks for the readjustment, I'll stop spoiling my laptop.
