SteamOS 3.6: How the Steam Deck atomic updates are improving (collabora.com)

While these efforts are more tailored to the needs of the Steam Deck, I could see it being useful as other immutable Linux devices start to enter the market in the coming years. Valve has done excellent work making Linux more usable for games, and most importantly, following through on that work over time. Imagine where Proton will be in five years?

I recently switched my gaming rig to PopOS - which I selected specifically for its push-button philosophy and easy Nvidia driver support - and it’s been so, so good. Even sleep/hibernation seems to work well despite my mish-mash of board, CPU, RAM and GPU providers. Kind of shocking, actually.

I have a second NVME (didn’t want to mess with dual-booting) with a Windows 10 install for CoD and Forza with the boys - otherwise, I never boot into Windows any more. Not having to deal with cryptic failure modes and consumer-hostile bullshit any more feels like such a load off.

One day soon I hope to format it altogether. Gaming on Linux is finally in such a great place.

I imagine--I dream--that it will be able to run not just the vast majority of games with ease but the vast majority of Windows software, including the Adobe, Autodesk, and MS Office products that many professionals require.
