I wasn't able to run Nextcloud without Docker (to save compute power on a tiny VPS), there were so many setup issues that I've run into, and the docs were terrible (undocumented folder permissions, no proper nginx configs). As an alternative, I use Google Drive through rclone drive mount (there was also their own drive mounter, which is dead now, I think), works fine, but it's not fast, and kinda pricy for my 1.5TB.
It seems to be a CEO issue. Nextcloud needs to focus on a replacement of Dropbox, which is fast, easy to install, secure, bug-free, and aesthetically appealing. In order words, replace only the Dropbox, not Dropbox and Microsoft and Google and a lot of other applications.
It's not meant to be a replacement for Dropbox but rather for Google Drive + Google Docs + Google Photos, all of which is fine by me as it's been working well for me as a replacement for all of those since 2020.
Yeah, I've been using it since the early days of OwnCloud, both personally and professionally. Love it and don't understand the haters at all. It's not perfect but it's really damn good -- and it's F/OSS.
I use that, but it's quite slow compared to running it yourself on hetzner on a VPS. Still the burden of updates.
About the banning... I don't do anything remotely shady and have been a customer over 5 years.
I've seen evidence of Hetzner banning people for no reasons, they also seem shady about their hardware access, not a good sign. It also seems about as expensive as running just Google Drive for my purposes (at least 2 TB with plans to expand further).
PS using E2E encryption on their Storage Box solution seems to be a decent alternative though.
