It’s shocking to me that it’s even legal to build electronic by default door release mechanisms with the manual overrides in different places.

The article directly addresses this.

But this would be worse for TikTok engagement, and then all trash media sites click farming stories out of it, and then we would need to discuss things on Hacker News how Haskell is a great language instead of this

"Tiktoker does something stupid for views, and media company misrepresents it for clicks."

Now we just need the tiktoker to make a video about the article.

She didn’t say she was trapped in the video, also she had a follow up video where she refutes the claim by these articles.

As someone who's spend much of his winter designing and developing vehicle firmware update systems, all I can say is WTaF? Sure, you've probably got software going to a central ECU, and then firmware updating subcomponents, which might be disabled while the update's running, but this is just such a bad way to handle thing.

I sort of agree. The instructions were written without "rule followers" in mind.

Most people commenting here realize that there are two ways to open the door:

1. Press the button

2. Pull a mechanical release latch

Obviously the second would work. There's a good chance that the first would work too. She tried neither.

The reasons were because she was instructed not to. For some, that sounds like the most normal thing in the world. For others it is bizarre. It is fun to watch the comments from both sides. :)

People rationally worry that pressing the button during an update might brick the car. Not an unreasonable worry. And I've seen reports that the mechanical release latch doesn't always work.

In any case, this is horrible design. You need to let users do whatever during upgrades (because, they WILL) and recover gracefully. Anything else is a horror show.

The manual release latch does always work.

TBH, they should be clearer that opening the door is ok, but I get why it is somewhat of a challenge. Parts of the update may trigger window recalibration, and that isn't really intended to be done with the door opening or closing at the time.

They should inform the user to get themselves and anything needed out. There really won't be a solution for unreasonable people who refuse to do so at that point.

The title seems misleading. It says she was trapped, but it seems like she chose to stay in the car.

While (I don't even need to read it) yes it's more than likely clickbait, but having any car where the backup mechanical door releases in all seats of the car aren't blindingly obvious is an incredibly stupid design decision. For some Tesla models the rear door releases have actual manuals on how to release (https://www.tesla.com/ownersmanual/modely/en_us/GUID-AAD769C...)

In a proper accident, where power is likely cut, and the occupants are disoriented (anyone who's been in a rollover will know this), the last thing you want to be is fumbling around trying to get out of the car.

I don't understand how they got approved in NZ. If you were to scratch build a car here with the same door release, you'd fail certification.

Older Model 3s have no rear door mechanical door releases at all [1]. That is a video from 2023, but I do not know how old the vehicle itself is. You have to crawl out through the front door if you want to exit the vehicle in the event of power loss such as during a fire.

It's ragebait, but for your information, the "Ticktocker" knew how to manually release, she choose not to because the power was on and she did not want to damage her Tesla, as Tesla say to not use the manual release while the power is on. It was her choice to stay in the car and to avoid damaging it.

But 40 minute for a software update, hopefully during that time they execute test batteries, else it is shameful. Rule of thumb: if your update take as much time as compiling GCC does, its too long.

Exactly, this should be a mandated safety feature; clearly visible emergency door releases. How is it not?

She was not “trapped” or “stuck”. She could get out at any moment.

Correct. As the article state, Teslas have manual door levers, like all normal cars, that can be operated without power. The tiktoker chose to not open the door, just for views & clicks.

And the blog in the OP chose to ignore all this and put a click bait headline

Headline is absolutely false. She was not trapped. Not surprised TikTok boosted the video though.

I think this is all about political signaling with her Tesla wishing she could pick up her Chic-Fli-A order.

To nobody's surprise. Those things are mortal traps. A tragedy waiting to happen.
