I want to be excited about it, but we'll really need more details apart from Qualcomm allowing it to exist (they're... problematic with long-term support https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2021/03/the-fairphone-2-hits... ) and performance being "great, just look at this object detection". They had the opportunities to drop a number from any benchmark they want... and they didn't. That's worrying.

In this case, Linaro has mostly been getting everything running with mainline kernel (and upstreaming their work): https://www.linaro.org/blog/qualcomm-and-linaro-enable-lates... . So things are looking a lot better than the usual Android ecosystem imo.

They say that you can't run Linux on M-series Macbooks because of Apple's closed ecosystem... but that's trivially false? Apparently this guy's not heard of Asahi. You can absolutely buy something like an M1 MBA and daily drive Linux on it. I think you need to keep a MacOS partition around and boot into it to update device firmware and such though.

Depends on what they meant by impossible/difficult. Running it at all? Not too hard to boot for supported hardware (m1/m2), but also depends on what you want to do with it. Extra usb display? Mic? High refresh rate? Not supported yet.

They didn't elaborate on the details, so it's hard to disprove either interpretation.
