While true in general there is a very big problem called NIMBYism (not in my back yard) where a great many places refuse to allow new landfills--resulting in the refuse having to be transported very long distances--and thus using a great deal of energy for the transportation.


Almost all municipal recycling goes to the landfill, ever since foreign countries stopped accepting American recyclables.

This article is quite a bit of "out of sight, out of mind" short shortsightedness.
