I’ve been through this 3 times on my recovery journey. I wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy. The first time resulted in two seizures because I was just trying to get over it at home. Resulted in getting 7 staples in the back of my head. It is ALWAYS worth going to a medically assisted detox facility, personal pride or potential costs be damned.

Someone I know died a year ago from trying to quit cold turkey.

I’m so sorry to hear that. Yeah, stopping alcohol or benzodiazepine consumption completely after years is the equivalent of pushing the gas pedal in your brain all the way to the floor. Scary stuff. I think too there are many older “functioning” alcoholics who have drank daily for years and inadvertently set themselves on this path when they decide to just quit for one reason or the other.

There are so many. You can be an alcoholic and still high functioning so it slips under the radar in a way that addiction to many drugs does not.

Stay safe.

On July 19th, 2021 I walked into a private emergency room and somehow convinced them to prescribe me something to treat my alcohol withdrawal (I was down to 2 hours of sobriety before withdrawal was setting in). It was a 15 day supply of Librium that I managed to stretch to about 30 days or so.

Anyways, I've been sober ever since and I'm still very thankful for that doctor's compassion which undoubtedly saved my life.

Also a great Belgian beer: https://www.delirium.be/en/beers/delirium-tremens

Imagine if Philip Morris called them "Lung Cancer" instead of Marlboro.

Fun (?) fact — because of this, some hospitals have prescription beer.

Haha this is true! During my alcoholism I visited the ER for an unrelated purpose and was “prescribed” a single warm can of Bud Light!
