I've done work with non-profits.... they are really about bottom line for their DEI staff. There is nothing more important that paying people that are on the extreme side of virtue signalling. Hopefully that era is ending soon. The sooner people stop virtue signalling, and actually just start doing the work - the better this world will be.

Do you not think it is possible to be virtuous without "virtue signalling"? But then I suppose there would be nothing to get angry about.

It's possible. Donations don't have to be public. We live in a world where it pays back to be liked, so people imitate it superficially, often with ulterior motives.

Steve Jobs is popularly known as a "stingy jerk" but actually he's made many private donations, and through Apple, while explicitly keeping it away form the public eye. He's donated over $50 million to Stanford hospitals and has contributed to many other charitable projects, but opting to be involved rather than just give money and forget about it. A lot of this only became known after his death.

True charity is hard. As it's about results, not intent. That's true virtue. Intent is cheap, even if it involves billions, because donations unless tracked through to the end, often disappear in various pockets having nothing to do with the intended cause.

Paying USD 22B over ask and then losing another 5 more seems like an unneccesarily expensive way to be able to say stupid things in public, but as the french say: it takes all kinds of people to make a world.
