bit slice "CPU was a very successful product that could only have existed in the 1970s." To a certain extent it is right the only part. To another view if one does not stick to a specific hardware but the idea and concept, it is not. In fact, I thought Linus has joined a company who do something similar on hardware level. Or may be even Apple chip with assistance from hardware for the software emulation ... (even from PowerPC to Intel emulation these days). Also, as it goes, on software level it is done ... from IBM microcode, to VM etc. Even the moon landing CPU is partially like this which you may say same or earlier era. I just wonder whether one still does this all the time (idea/concept, from hardware to software ...).

Obviously not all will emulate on bit level, but why not.
