I love this. So much real history has been buried under social norms. Swept under the rug for later generations to rediscover. How much more of our real history is just waiting to be uncovered.
There are interesting parallels between automatic writing. electronic
voice phenomena [0], "hallucinations" obtained in generative systems
seeded with noise and the misinterpretation of "chatter" in
intelligence analysis. The common factor is that "We see/hear what we
want to". It happens wherever there are imperceptible biases impinging
on the system. A nice portrayal is the ad-lib construction of Keyser
Soze's character in the Usual Suspects [1].
I saw a great documentary with a séance in. The participants contacted a medieval Welsh monk who was providing fascinating answers... He couldn't say a single word in Welsh though when asked (all the participants were English). They certainly convinced me :-D
