The number of cores has gone way up, with AMD pioneering a massive growth here. They also super sized the amount of PCIe available. Memory bandwidth has gone up significantly but not colosally (unless you consider the nearly 1GB of 3d vcache). NVMe are blitz fast. 400GBe is ok (but man NVLink is lapping everyone badly). Servers are getting crazy faster.
Part of this article is talking about people not needing advancements. Fine, sure. But many people do benefit greatly from this or that improvement here. Different things are different people's bottleneck & all pieces are pressured to improve.
It's excellent that single system scale out continues to advance so. I'm excited to see Intel re-entering the fray soon with Sierra Forest. And more excitingly, CXL 3+ really gets us to a point where there is a large pool of very high-speed devices servers can access in a somewhat on-demand fashion (and hopefully also serve as highspeed fabric).
