Remember when Toyota had to physically recall millions of vehicles because the accelerator pedal got stuck under the floor mat? How is it that the word “recall” makes sense to use in both instances?


Because both are safety issues. The method of fixing doesn’t matter. The issue matters.


It's the font size on the dashboard for the "check oil" light. Lumping this into the same taxonomy as "uncontrollable acceleration requiring new parts" is farcical.


We call both the ability to modify some random file without permission with physical access under specific circumstances and Spectre/Meltdown CVEs despite being wildly different severity.

Recall is a specific thing where the NHTSA requires a manufacturer to fix a vehicle. The fact that recalls can have different levels of severity and take different levels of effort to fix is not surprising.

I agree the headline is written to make it sound like a huge issue when it's not, but it is factual.


While I do think calling it a recall is a bit much, it’s more than just a check light. It’s actual controls
