People that haven't been into management typically have a very naive idea about how much power managers have. It isn't that much, you need to parrot a lot of stuff you don't like just because others want to listen it, or the board and shareholders think it is important.

A CEO isn't just a manager though, at director level and above you get to have a say about what gets worked on and what doesn't in a way you don't if you're lower-level management.
