San Francisco sues California over 'unsafe,' 'disruptive' self-driving cars (washingtonpost.com)

We need more self driving cars in Los Angeles. There were more pedestrian deaths than homicides in 2023. Most people who walk or bike in LA would rather share the road with an ever improving robot than a distracted human.

Los Angeles needs more subway is what. Because everyone taking the subway is not driving a car. Also brings up the point that it's inexcusable San Francisco hasn't built out a mile or so of subway per year over the last 30 years.

That would only make sense for the most frequented routes but the remaining 80% would be challenging since each person has a unique point A and B across a sprawling metropolis. The "last mile" in Los Angeles is a different beast. Each subway route would only improve the commute for less than one percent of the population. A better way would be dedicated bus lanes but it still wouldn't be as efficient as driving due to the amount of transfers you would need.

LA seems perfect for a subway + scooters/bikes style combination.

The weather is pleasant year round and solves the last mile problem.

Public transportations agencies seem awfully reluctant to try out something new.

Tell that to the pedestrian dragged under the car that didn’t know how to behave in an emergency. Or the other pedestrian killed by that other self driving car.

Adding self driving won’t remove unsafe drivers from the road it’ll remove professional drivers who are largely safe and law abiding. They’ll be replaced with moronic robots and the most unsafe people will still be on the road.

You can take your self driving future and shove it up a different timeline.

Two terrible incidents by companies that are no longer operating, to how many accidents by human drivers in the meanwhile? Drunk drivwrs are going to keep driving illegally but given the option, some of them are going to choose to let the car drive them home instead of running over pedestrians.

I feel safer in a Waymo than I do in any given Uber or Lyft.

Self driving cars are the future. They enhance pedestrian and biker safety. It's the human driven cars that are unsafe.

Allow Waymo on all of Market St. and you'll see it coexists wonderfully.

If you are going to have a healthy discourse you cant be asleep at the wheel. Steer the ship. There seems to be something wrong here. Or maybe that is what HN is about? Btw, my bro is still on mute.

California could repeal Prop 13 and let the city collect enough property taxes to pay for services.

How about the city doesn’t squander 15 billion.

The problem isn’t that they don’t have enough money, it’s that they have too much. Look at education spending in Ca vs outcomes compared to states that spend way less

Self driving cars have no soul

What if it's a Kia? /j

I absolutely loved those ads with the hamsters. Truly great advertising.
