I dated a girl from Ballston Spa roughly 15 years ago. Visiting her folks, I was at the time shocked how right wing the place was. Especially since I'm from the South and had heard stories all my life about how liberal the northeast is.
I don't thing anyone who has actually been to these places should be surprised about this. The wine store owner from the opening anecdote probably didn't much socialize outside their own circles to be taken by surprise like that.
