Ask HN: Why did they nerf the SEC thread?

It was at the top and now it's relegated to backwater pages.

Which thread? https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=38932228 is on the 2nd page, and my suspicion is that it's there because of the radically higher number of comments than upvotes.

It had way more upvotes before and it was a link to magazine article. They merged a bunch of threads togethers and in the process nerfed it. I think the article had well over 100 upvotes maybe 200 upvotes.

Edit: I'm not sure how merging effects the ultimate upvote count.

The comments merge. Posts don't merge. The old post is still here: https://hn.algolia.com/?dateRange=last24h&page=0&prefix=fals...

I see but whatever is there now has 55 upvotes, but the thread that had the most comments had 319 upvotes (the one I consider nerfed).

There were 5 threads about this. One is a first party update from the SEC about the issue. One has no engagement. The other 3 were marked as dupes, and their comments were moved to the first party update. Nothing was "nerfed".

It feels nerfy, at the least it is nerf adjacent.

Well if its feeling or facts we go with facts.
