I wonder if unrealistic optimism leads some people to accept the risks of pursuing careers in politics, and if this unrealistic optimism inversely correlates with cognitive ability? This certainly seems to relate to the numbers of politically naive people in Congress.


A lot of people are sure they'll win the lottery eventually. Far more than ever will. I wonder how much this tips the scales for why people were optimistic about their financial future.
