China’s progress in low-carbon energy is one of the few bright spots in a world that is otherwise facing a lot of challenges. It’s pretty embarrassing watching folks in the West fiddle around and debate whether it’s even possible to decarbonize, while China just goes ahead and does it.
On the flipside, it’s also hard not to notice that China’s energy revolution (including massive growth in renewables, batteries, EVs, nuclear and coal plant construction) has the incidental effect of making the country massively less reliant on imported energy, especially compared to all of the more Western-allied Asian nations. A less optimistic observation is that this could be less about climate change than it is about positioning China to be resilient to an imminent conflict that threatens global oil supply lines.
It's funny that hopefully the West will get their sh*t together because of these types of actions. Maybe it'll be a new "Cold War", but instead it would be a "Green War"?
If they weren't being overtly evil at the same time I'd be rooting for them.
