I wonder if retailers are considering the impact of people checking themselves out? Most stores I've been to only have 1 human on a register so most people are now checking themselves out and making honest mistakes.
I've accidentally forgot to pay for things on numerous occasions, the self checkouts don't give you enough room for all your items so your cart ends up being a mix of paid and unpaid items. Multiple times I've went back in the store to pay for it. Sometimes I don't get home until I realize, the last time it happened I was already at my car and too busy and said screw it...
The other day the register kept ringing up my bananas for 0.03, it just wouldn't weigh them, again I said screw it and kept going.
They can continue locking up every item on the shelf too, countless times I've been deterred from buying things because I don't want to wait for someone to get me a screwdriver or whatever, I might as well buy it from Amazon if I have to wait.

A lot of their loss is self inflicted.
