it is surprising that manufacturers turn on motion smoothing by default, as it ruins the aesthetic of most content and makes it look like it was shot on a 1990s camcorder.

New generations will get used to more fps, and new content then would be able to filmed at 60 fps. I think that's a good thing. We can't be stuck in the past because of current habits

True. However my theory is that filmmakers would not use the same shots in a 60fps world that they use in a 24fps world.

The aesthetic of it is so different, seemingly much about the creative aspects of a production would be done differently.

Motion blur is evidently used by filmmakers in an artistic/aesthetic way similar to the way rock bands use guitar distortion and electronic musicians let some signals clip, photographers use lens flare, use limited camera dynamic range for artistic effects, etc.

Adding a post-production step to remove the "limitations" that were used artistically does alter the aesthetics of the production.

Imagine if metal albums were played back on "better" stereo equipment that removed all of the distortion products produced by the amplifiers.

That's for sure. Still, if you want you can always use older tech, like they do with film cameras now.
