The Evolution of Intelligence Itself (metastable.org)

I find insulting the current hype. AGI? Seriously? A lossy text compressor with next word prediction and synthesis model build on stolen artists work is not the future.

Billions spend in training and energy. Meanwhile, there are wars and poverty is rampant.

Yes, LLM's have useful properties. But require fine-tuning and RAG implementation. Intelligence? Common. Let's stop with marketing and move again to be rational and practical.

As a nerd I too love the idea of AI, but I don’t get this:

> AI has the potential to improve every human endeavor, since almost everything we care about requires intelligence.

If intelligence is all it takes why not do it with our own ?

What do we need AI for ?

Sure, it might take longer, but what’s the rush ?

There's a rush because about 10 million people die from cancer every year worldwide, 7 million died from COVID, 6 million people have Alzheimer's in the US alone. All three of these can be tragic and brutal ways to die, which ripple out to family and friends. All told the US spends over $4 trillion dollars on healthcare per year, what if we could do way better and spend way less? And healthcare is just one thing of many that AI could improve.

I want AI to improve things. Unfortunately, the US spending so much on healthcare every year is a policy problem and I don’t think it’s something AI can easily solve.

Imagine spraying human decision making at small hard problems with the IO of text, speech, images, video, api calls, etc

We need AI to consolidate all the brain power of humanity in one place.
