Ask HN: What are your experiences with Apple Card?
7 points by hoten 5 months ago | hide | past | favorite | 12 comments
General inquiry about how people are finding this new card service. Do people use it for more than just purchasing Apple products for the 3% cash back? Can Android users load the card into their digital wallets (seems you can't - yikes). Does anyone regret getting the card?

Of course, I ask because of my own annoying experience just now.

Last week I ordered a new macbook, one of the higher end models. At checkout there is an offer for the Apple Card, and so I do it for the 3% cash back. Surprisingly the credit limit given was _less_ than the order purchase amount, so the Apple store ended up canceling the order a week later.

Attempts to raise the limit w/ Goldman Sachs (who I understand have never done consumer credit cards until now) hit a deadend as the card is too new. The limit on the card is surprisingly low, I have other cards (albeit with history) >10x the Apple Card's limit. It seems odd to receive a limit of ~2500 from a bank when you present them with a tech-industry salary + high credit score.

I'm not an expert, but might that be the reason you got a lower limit? When a credit decision is made, they look at your existing credit and take into account how much debt you could be in if you went out tomorrow and maxed it all. So if you are holding multiple cards with large limits... you might just be maxed out.

Most likely not. Available credit has very little impact on credit approval decisions. Credit usage on the other hand is a huge factor.

That's my understanding too (and doesn't explain my experience, as I utilize my cards regularly)

I use it as my daily card. I like it a lot. Why?

- You can grind down the thickness on the corner of their metal card and use it as a box cutter. Probably don't risk taking it on airplanes, though.

- Cash back (that goes into their high-yield savings account)

- Get notifications and can view transactions easily on iPhone.

- It's pretty effortless.

- I'm not into becomimg a credit card offer expert and getting the most miles or cash back.

Worth mentioning this breaking news: Apple and Goldman Sachs are ending their Apple Card relationship.

Who knows how Apple Card will end up.

There's no annual fee so I'm not sure why someone would regret getting it. I've had it for about 3 years and use it for 3% back at Apple and Walgreens. It does the job.

It really shined on an international vacation about 2 years ago. Where Amex wasn't accepted the no-foreign-transaction-fee Mastercard was very useful.

When I applied they would only do a hard pull on an applicant's credit if they were approved. If that's still the case then I would definitely apply, even just for the thick metal card and the future long-standing line of credit.

It's rad. I use it for everyday expenses. I have it set up as a shared card with my spouse, we each have our own physical and digital cards. The integration with the Apple ecosystem is pretty great if that's what you are into; we get notifications on each other's transactions, and the categorized spending breakdowns in the wallet app help us with budgeting. Paying credit card bills is easy with the app. Disputing a charge is easy with the app.

Well it's over four years old, so not really that new.

The UI and UX are great, but I only use it for Apple subscriptions and sometimes groceries. Everything else I'd rather use my Chase card that gives me travel points. At this moment I value that more than cash back.

2% on Apple Pay purchases is pretty good, depending on if you frequent places that support it.

Never used the physical card anywhere. Use it with Apple Pay in B&M as well as web.

it is pretty good. easy to use/manage.
