I cannot imagine what he thought was going to happen. What he got was exactly what it said on the tin. If it's worse than he wanted it's exactly his fault.
There was a pretty insistent "Trump is only pretending to be a deranged idiot, and is actually a magical super-genius" refrain prior to the 2016 election.
That is somewhat harder to sustain now, of course.
