Ask HN: As an experienced full stack engineer, how to get my first job in ML?

I have almost 15 years experience as a full stack engineer at several successful web startups, reaching the equivalent of around E6/E7 level. Now I'd like to transition to the ML space, ideally on the research side of things where I can learn about working with or training large models. I'm also open to getting my foot in the door from the engineering/infrastructure side.

I've looked into a few of the obvious big players so far, and it seems tough to break in without prior ML experience. Of course, I've learned a little about the basics of model training on my own, going through the derivations and implementing toy models in notebooks, but that hasn't been enough when the candidate pool is so large that recruiters appear to require professional ML experience. On top of all that, a lot of companies appear to be going through headcount issues.

Would love to hear about opportunities that seem like a good fit at companies that are hiring, and open to suggestions on what I can do on my own to be a more attractive candidate. Thanks!
