Firstly: yeah. There is a part of the west that's so terrified of being seen as some kind of xenophobic they're embracing things that are inimical to their own values.
But secondly: why are "we" as the west somehow required to take a stance and get involved in other countries' affairs?
Do you take this same stace with crime or injustice that occurs close to you, say in your city? It's all fine because it's not affecting you individually?
If you want to keep your values, you have to actually believe in them first. If you think they only apply to you and not those around you, then you don't believe in them.
Ah, forget the statue. It doesn't matter. IMHO what should "the West" have done in reaction to Iranian uprising was to offer easing of sanctions and more economical cooperation with Iran, predicated on increasing freedom of women. This would drive wedge into Iranian ruling elite and directly help the opposition.
Too many of my female classmates and family in the West are now single and childless...we have a serious family problem and sexualize our women too much...the West should stop betraying its own women before concerning itself with Iran.
