Pig Kidney Works A Record 2 Months In Donated Body (apnews.com)

If I'm understanding correctly: it sounds like the kidney was still working, they just chose to end the experiment after two months. Which is amazing!

The link in the article "After wrestling with the choice" has more coverage of the procedure. It says they initially only intended to have the experiment last a month, but it was going so well that they asked permission of his sister to delay the memorial and extend one more month.

Ah, that makes sense. Very kind of his sister to grant them permission; I think this research will help a lot of people someday.

I’m confused. They say he was dead. Was the kidney working for two months in a deceased body?

Sort of. They implanted the kidney in a man who was brain dead, but not dead dead. So the kidney worked, just not in a true living recipient.

> So the kidney worked, just not in a true living recipient

In the spirit of "the operation was a success, but the patient is dead" or "the launch was a success but the rocket crashed" or "the self driving car needs a driver". /s

This is great news. Thank you Mo Miller.

Thank you pigs for being so similar to us surface monkeys.

The pig's liver gave up after 2 months. /s
