I've had good results with the newish antihistamine levocetirizine (generic for Xyzal), as well as guaifenesin extended release pills for general mucus relief. Both are OTC and cheap in generic form.

Guaifenisin fucks me up big time-- it always leaves me with bouts of existential depression and borderline psychosis a day or two later.

YMMV-- age is definitely a factor. When I was younger (20s) I was able to handle it without issue.
