What Data Does My Car Collect About Me and Where Does It Go? (foundation.mozilla.org)

If governments don't act to stop the collection of data and outrageous invasion of privacy and or give drivers full control over what data is collected by manufacturers then it seems we'll have to take matters into our own hands and resort to hacking our vehicles in similar ways we do with our computers to improve online privacy.

Fortunately, I drive a vehicle that's too old to collect this info but if I were presented with a new one then the first thing I'd hack would be to sever the vehicle's connection with the Internet—remove the hardware completely or nuke it. Second, I'd then sever all unnecessary sensors or render them useless. Third, I'd be searching for like-minded hackers who know more about such matters than I do with the purpose of finding a way of resetting the vehicle's data to a new-car no-owner-yet status so if or when it goes for service there would be little or no data available for the service agent to collect for and on behalf of the manufacturer.

This is truly outrageous, seems our governments have forgotten they are actually responsible to the citizenry and have a duty of care to protect us citizens—not to further line the pockets of multinational companies with even more profit, whether they manufacture vehicles or not.

Let me point y'all in the direction of the people who can answer that question, but won't.

Basically, they're the group that's been writing all of the API's that slurp up and compose info into the information corpus that automotive insurance groups feed their actuaries. Interviewed with them once, would not have taken the offer even if it materialized because the more research I did, the more ethics based stop points I found myself running into.
