Revealed: US immigration uses fake social media profiles across investigations (theguardian.com)

I do not doubt that journalists routinely do this sort of investigative fakery, because you will often see a news report where the outlet has plundered the poor sap's social media profile of data and photos that were not available to the general public, but something like "friends of friends". I am confident that they do it by spraying friend requests until someone accepts, and then they are, technically, a "friend of a friend" who can read semi-private stuff in the profile.

Moral of the story: never use "friends of friends" as a privacy setting. And don't accept friend requests.

Yes but…isn’t it the spirit of the social media?

The moral of the story maybe should be to avoid popular social medial overall. Or at least avoid to trust the profile you are not entirely sure of trustworthy.
