Ink Comparisons: Signing the back of your credit card (fountainpennetwork.com)

Once I heard that it was best practice to write "SEE ID" on the back instead of signing. But nobody cheks that or demands ID. And yeah, the comments mention, nobody looks at the card anymore. In fact, nobody touches my card but me anymore! The POS terminals are all customer-facing now; that seems to be a hard requirement from the processors. It was allegedly a "touchless COVID-19 precaution" but obviously it's for other reasons too, such as security (if a poorly-paid worker gets a glimpse of your card they can absolutely memorize the contents of it and commit fraud later.)

I'm not sure why cards even have a space to sign anymore, except as a nod to legacy. Perhaps, I don't know, perhaps if you sign for a purchase in person rather than using your PIN, the merchant could challenge you to show your signature on the card. But I don't think that happens.

Oh, and I use blue Sharpie to sign my cards nowadays.
