For many people (especially those who tend to identify most strongly with one group or another) all things covid related have become political issues and tenets of a secular religion. For these people, who are numerous and vastly over-represented in the upper echelons of the political, financial, educational and corporate world, this is a purely tribal issue (like many others). Unfortunately, rationality is not a factor when it comes to tribal fealty.
