Ocean heat record broken, with grim implications for the planet (bbc.co.uk)

The planet will be fine. We may be boiled to death, but the planet itself will continue spinning. Likely the worms at the bottom of the ocean near the volcanic vents won't even notice we've gone.

Saying our mismanagement of the biosphere is somehow "grim" for the planet as a whole is hyperbole.

That's certainly good news for the mountain chains and tectonic plates then.

No volcanoes were harmed in the destruction of the anthropocene ecosystem will make a fine epitaph.

So we just wait for the next tipping point that will be the extinction of mammals.

I would prefer we not allow the mammals to go extinct, but with our big brains we seem to be expert in rationalizing away the consequences of our actions. I know it's heresy here to claim that bitcoin and other proof of work schemes aren't green. And I know we all like to hop in a plane foe the family vacation. But we're the elite, we're entitled to perks. It's always OTHER PEOPLE who need to change. YOUR electric car has a negative total cost of ownership, but MY Tesla is completely green. YOUR stupid flip phone is killing the environment because of all the trace metals we have to dig out of the Congo to make it's parts, but MY iPhone is fine.

By the time enough of us figure out that it's US who are consuming too much, or more appropriately, excreting too much waste heat, co2, plastic... by the time we figure it out, people will be dying of heat related issues in Texas and Florida.

I don't excuse myself... I live off the grid and grow some of my own food. My lifestyle is pretty low impact, but it's far from zero and I had to spend quite a bit to make it work. And not everyone will be able to live like I do. Mea Culpa.

But I have hope. Many in the next generation seem to grok what's going on. More in my generation understand as well. It's HARD to live the low impact lifestyle we probably all need to live to avoid envirogeddon.

But... if you can... maybe take a vacation close to home and keep that mobile phone an additional year.

Okay... I feel better for screaming into the void... feel free to send me an invoice for a counseling hour of therapy.

When people make statements like this. I would like to know a few things: where was the temperature taken? at surface level? 1cm below the surface? 1m below the surface? 10m below the surface? 1-2m above the surface? because they are all different.

Then I want to know how the previous temp was determined that they compared it to. I'm sure they are not trying to lie to us but I'm certain they are wrong. The ocean is not warming.

Let's see.

Why are you certain they're wrong? What if you applied all of your intelligence and engineering knowledge to the problem of measuring the ocean's temperature, and found that these scientists' methods had done as well or better than you would have?

Conspiracies and mistakes abound, to be sure; but they don't need to be hidden, in general they happen right out in the open, or are exposed relatively quickly. We don't need to impugn the hard work of dedicated people just because your intuition says otherwise.

Mmm.. maybe the water in this pan won't get any hotter ...

Maybe you should get a subscription to Nature or Science journals and find it out.

The information is there and it’s literally not the conspiracy you hint at.
