I'm not sure I would use "surprising" as the indicator of what should stay or what should be cut, but for sure there should be a goal of removing all which is not essential. This is especially good when you provide footnotes or links to additional information for those wishing to dive deeper.
Way back in school I recall the difficulty of writing an essay within a maximum number of words. Inevitably I would be way over the limit and be forced to edit with an eye for brevity. And to be fair, when being brief, content which is surprising to the consumer perhaps activates their brain more, allowing them to fill in gaps better.
