I wonder how the emergency services and LEA people feel, finding out their privacy has been invaded, and very probably has been leaking SIGINT to people who are sufficiently cashed up to make the investment to exploit the weakness?
After all, at least some crime now is done at scale which equals state-actor ops. So even without going full adversarial nation-state, if I was working in e.g. drug enforcement or money laundering in many parts of the world, my adversary very probably would be better equipped than I am.
It never ceases to amaze me how LOW the barrier to snooping is, for rich and famous people. How come JLo and Bennifer type people wind up having their comms stolen by journalists all the time? So.. if its worthwhile for yellow-press paps, how can it not be worthwhile for drug lords?
I believe there are semi conspiracy theory ideas around why the UK handed out Enigma class units to the colonies post-war. On the surface it probably DID protect their secrets from casual abuse, but usefully was also decryptable by GCHQ. Is this too conspiratorial?
