Scientists discover new isopod species in the Florida Keys (phys.org)

Human evolution taking its course.

Looks like they discovered it just in time to watch it being boiled to death. The ocean surrounding Florida has hit highs of 38℃ in recent days… not much marine life can survive that.

For what it’s worth, the manatee bay bouy [0] recorded the temperature at the sea surface level. Marine life will be just fine, as most (all?) marine life lives actually within the ocean rather than on the surface.

All the bleached coral reefs around the Keys would like a word.

1.5m/5' below the surface, not on the surface. For that buoy. And although that was the first, it was not the only buoy recording those temperatures.

How fast do you think shallow water cools?

temperature itself isn't (directly) a threat to most macroorganisms, but marine life will not "be just fine". The real threat to them is the rapidly acidifying oceans

Yeah. It'll be fine. No trouble at all.

> Marine life will be just fine

For now.

I came here to say the same, but I wonder if they can bury themselves to keep cool.

Larvae can travel briefly with the fishes. Adults are short lived. I don't know how they will adapt but I'm feeling hopeful about those.

It’s named Gnathia jimmybuffetti… after Jimmy Buffett.

We really gotta work on these names

With about one million species having been discovered, I think we can have fun with a few.

If we couldn't laugh, we'd all go insane.

Every species is precious, not matter its name.

Don't you agree, little Iandumoema smeagol?

I had cultured some Gnathia in the past. This sea vampires are easy to keep in captivity.

The larvae are like a cross between a tick and a lava lamp. Males defend leks of females.
