I encountered my first virus I think around 1991. I don’t remember the name of the virus, but I do know I had to learn to format a disk, and reinstall DOS. A few years later I came across a computer virus zoo on one my friends computer - I remember thinking it was extremely dangerous.
Antiviruses were not built in then : you had to buy them, and manually run them whenever you inserted something new ( a floppy basically) just in case the floppy came with a virus. There were indeed lots of stories about av and virus people being the same.
