Hey, this is easy to fix: buy self-published books. Most authors don't really care about DRM, giving most of their revenue to Amazon or the man in the middle, or having to accept that an illustration they commissioned and paid $$$ for now looks like crap because Amazon eats their revenue on proportion to the book's size in bytes[^1] and their publisher really wants to pocket that 70%. And if you find a small number typos in a self-published book, just send them to the author.
The problem is promotion and payments. Amazon et al will deal with payments from around the world, will print & ship hard copies, will deal with refunds, and will promote your book across their properties. You get none of this with self-publishing.
