Acorn and the BBC Micro: From Education to Obscurity (2007) (lowendmac.com)

I was one of the 20,000 happy Acorn Atom users. What was so special about Atom Basic was the ability to directly embed 6502 Assembler inside a basic program.

Between that an a wonderful EPROM that provided a number of graphics and sound extensions, I had a huge amount of fun embarrassing the heebies out of my fellow school computer nerds (with their Spectrums, Vic-20s etc.) with what you could get out of the otherwise unassuming Acorn Atom.
