Ruby itself was developed specifically for Emacs. Decisions were made about syntax specifically because they did or did not work well with default Emacs movement and structure editing.

My source is an Emacs Chat with Sacha Chua, and the guest mentioned that they heard it from the developer of Ruby.

So the source here is a tad removed, but it sounded right to me!
