Reddit is going to remove mods of private communities unless they reopen (theverge.com)

Quite a shift from Spez's original "we're not worried, really!"

Love or hate reddit, one really has to commend how quickly he's managed to utterly alienate the majority of the website and make its most ardent users want to look elsewhere

I don't see any shift. Why would he be worried? They can remove these mods and give the position to a million other people who want it and will do just as good a job.

If he makes so-called "powermods" go do something else, that will be a win in my book.

He hasn’t alienated anyone. The vast majority of users don’t really give a shit. Infact I’m kinda glad they’re chasing profits, it’s what any serious company should aim at.

My only qualm is they should probably improve their app. It’s like their one job at this point. What even is that video player?

> He hasn’t alienated anyone. The vast majority of users [...]

you were not entitled by anyone to speak on behalf of everyone, Mr. Account with twelve days of live

> My only qualm

while you are worried about the video player, the moderators (who have been working for free for years to at least make the place where you watch your funny videos decent) have been waiting for decades for the tools to be able to moderate, and they have been promised dozens of times (all lies)

if you had problems with some power tripping powermods (no one denies they exist) that doesn't mean everyone is like that: have better judgement and measure your words

Really? "Anyone" is obviously false. I was a regular for 16 years, opened a ton of subreddits in the first rush (/r/education was the biggest one) and he alienated me enough to shred my account and stop visiting. I don't hold ill will, it's their site to enshittify, but the value proposition without 3rd party ux is really horrible.

I’m not trusting newly created accounts on this issue.

Created 12 days ago.

"Not alienated anyone" is too strong a statement... he has alienated atleast one person, me, with his arrogance.

you can chase profits but execution is key which reddit struggles with as you alluded with their shoddy video player.

there are several ways they could have monetized 3rd party apps while not angering the developer community that helped them become popular.

I and many long-term redditors would have paid premium to use it but they're burned up so much good will.

even chasing profits is dubious. they could have made onlyfans years ago. they could have made a tiktok (they can't), but the CEO lacks vision so anything they do will be late and substandard.

I don’t see that developers helped reddit become popular. It was already popular. When due to needing to balance the books you have to end what was indirectly but effectively a river of revenue, of course a few people are going to be upset.

the first reddit mobile apps were 3rd party apps including alien blue which was then purchased by reddit.

mobile makes a majority of their and most consumer sites, so i'd argue they owe their mobile lineage to 3rd party apps because they were there when reddit wasn't

It’s a website though.

Agree. Cutting out (api) users who don’t pay isn’t a bad business model

That’s an absurd oversimplification of the issue.

There was an initial shift to paying more attention to the bottom line. After that I don’t see a shift other than he’s taking care of business as he has a right to do.

Doesn’t indicate worry, just action, not that there would be anything wrong with having concerns, aka worry.

Yeah that guy sucks. Just goes to show you not everyone is meant to be a CEO.

Hey now, his leadership is saving me 5-10 hours a week in not browsing Reddit. Imagine how many millions of hours a year he’s saved for humanity.

Same. It’s just really disappointing to see how this all played out because of his handling of it. But I agree, I stopped using Reddit and haven’t looked back. I feel better for it.

Good. Communities belong to the people, not the egomaniac moderators. Any people who don't want to participate in the community can leave, but holding the entire community hostage is not ok.

Despite the fact that we were asked what our concerns were and shared them 12 days ago, we haven't received ANY response from them after that, complete silence for almost two weeks and counting. So it appears that the reddit admins are not acting in good faith and aren't discussing this with us. They are relying only on vaguely worded threats.

‘This is a courtesy notice to let you know that you will lose moderator status in the community by end of week.’

Wow.

Who is modcodeofconduct? I have a hard time believing anyone other than spez would be so hostile as to give mods 24 hours to reopen.

I think it is more than one person.

And with the amount of vitriol directed at the account you can't blame them for being shirty. At the end of the day, it is Reddit's way or the highway. And people are having trouble accepting that.

Aka telling the mods “fuck around and find out.” Surprised it’s taken this long actually. There’s plenty of people who will line up to take on the job.

meanwhile /r/videos has turned into a profanity required subreddit
