Elon Musk triples down on making Twitter terrible for trans people (techcrunch.com)

By Musk's logic, shouldn't "normie" also be a bannable slur? Sure, connotation (implied meaning) can eventually overwhelm denotation (literal definition), but I don't think "cis" is there yet.

I guess "neuro-typical" goes on the watch list too.

This reminds me of the early days of Trump, when he'd be saying things, and mainstream sources were like "Wow, he's just spewing absolute nonsense" and not realising that Trump, and now Musk, is just reflecting back a collective shared insanity to an audience who has been actively building this alternate world for a long time.

"cis is a slur" isn't a spur of the moment bit of stupidity, it's a long running bit of stupidity that is shared by a large audience that ranges from active and knowing evil to unhinged conspiracy believers and all the various shades of Trumpism in between.

It shows how closed the world the author lives in that they think “cis” is commonly used.

Maybe. Or your comment shows the closed world you live in if you don't think it is commonly used.

I'd argue that it isn't commonly used in the sense of gender, but also that it isn't a slur, doesn't need to be banned, and isn't harmful in any way.

The degree to which a lot of the discussion around trans people is an online phenomenon can't be overstated. It happens offline, but not much compared to what social media (and possibly quite young people in general) would have you believe.

I had to add it to my iPhone dictionary to write it in my comment above.

I’ve never had it be commonly used IRL except talking to/about trans people (which TBH isn’t a common topic of discussion) but it is somewhat common online.

One good thing, I have not encountered a single insufferable fanboy in weeks.

No, not terrible, if you don't want to be called by any word - that's okay and will be respected in any polite conversation.

But no need to call words you don't like a slur and ban them (especially if it's not a slur).

no need to call words you don't like a slur and ban them

Really? Because I've heard transgender people say that calling them the wrong gender is basically a slur/hate crime.

See, and nobody bans this words. The reason it's considered a slur is because it's used to disrespect and attack a person. So the word is okay, hate is not

Exactly this. It's not that hard.
