Push Notifications Are Out of Control (theatlantic.com)

This is something I've noticed lately. (About 5 years)

On my own phone, I want to turn off certain full screen/lockscreen features of Spotify. But I cannot do that without turning off all Spotify notifications, which includes the ability to change songs on the fly.

I thought that was bad enough, until I took a look at my mother's phone.

My mother's Android phone is... well it's a nightmare. She has so many ridiculous notifications that the notification bar is completely unusable. It took me nearly 15 seconds to actually scroll to the bottom of the list as quickly as possible.

The majority of them are from online payment or coupon/companion apps for certain stores. (Digital and Physical) They appear to be automated, and sent on 4hr ~ 8hr intervals, endlessly spamming the user.

She isn't very tech savvy, being in her 60s, so I had to give her a step by step example of how to turn them off. But here's the thing, you have to turn them off one by one. And there are something upwards of 60 of these offending apps.

It was bad enough that she had gotten used to using the phone without the "pull down" menu at all. All frivolous changes to settings, she would do through the settings menu.
