Something Weird Is Going on with Melatonin (theatlantic.com)

The problem is that Melatonin is not regulated. Some research has already been done and actual dosage levels vs advertised levels can be off by +/- 400%. Add to the fact that the recommended dosage level for adults is 1mg to 5mg this can be very bad. On top of this is simple search for melatonin on Amazon gives results for 20mg and 30mg tablets. And on top of that, a lack of understanding by most patients makes them take two tablets when one doesn’t work. So a 30mg advertised tablet that could easily be 60mg to 75mg gets doubled to to 120mg to 150mg. No wonder this is an issue. Most adults will do well with 1mg but try finding 1mg tablets??

Gummy medicine- probably bad around toddlers. Definitely goes for recreational drugs too.

Would love some other guided beyond https://slatestarcodex.com/2018/07/10/melatonin-much-more-th... but my sense is that people are awful at using melatonin, using unreasonable dosages casually. That it would build up & hurt kids is unsurprising to me.

I am curious what actually happens when it builds up like this. Article isnt super specific. How do doctors even know to look for this?
