Strange how I read the same memo and came to the opposite conclusion.
Handouts suggest some form of charity, but in the memo it is clear that there it is to the benefit of the business that open source can advance the technology at a fraction of the cost.
Ie open source is saving these business millions of dollars and and months of research.
My God so much discussion on a damn leaked memo. Couldn't this just be inferred by reading commits instead ? Open source AI stack = Models + base runtime like PyTorch or TF. tF is built from ground up afaik and PyTorch builds on Torch which is not BigTech handout. The transformer architecture was somebody's PhD thesis at CMU. So how is this article valid if we take all of these data points into account ?
OpenAI benefited from research from Google so it's not just open source.
fine tunning might be more useful for most use cases. I might be that a classifier that takes a prompt as input and outputs which model to use might be a better solution.
