Ask HN: Is Principal/Staff the new Senior?

Senior is like a reward for three years of experience now from what I have seen.

I saw a panel with 6 people that had Principal/Staff titles and they were talking about their first months in that role after they were promoted.

One situation mentioned was how that person got their first "big 1-week project" for the first time and was nervous about it, how they overcame that etc.

Then another said they joined the oncall rotation for the first time to learn more about how things really are running.

I was a bit baffled that people with Principal/Staff titles could be having first experiences like that. So I'm trying to understand where the industry is in terms of titles right now. I understand it's a fluid thing and there are other pressures (e.g. someone must get a raise but they can't unless they are promoted) but I wanted to get a better feeling about this.
