It's funny watching all this because we had all this in the 90's and early 2k's and went away from it for a reason. Anyone remember Hotline or Caracho? These were client/server/tracker software for federated communities. If you wanted to host a server which had chat, messaging, forum, files, etc you'd download the server software and run on your computer using something like DYNDNS to keep your host address static. You'd register with a tracker so that others could find you. Trackers could ban servers they didn't like by not listing them. People running client software would connect to a tracker to get a list of servers and connect to them if allowed. The server operator could have a free for all or create privileged accounts. It was great.

But it can't scale and it's too complex for most people. People left these types of networks for Facebook, Twitter, etc.

Going back to this, or a variation of it, is simply regressive. It's the wrong direction.
