Momeni... lists himself as the owner of a tech company called Expand IT Inc. and as a graduate of the University of California, Berkeley.

However, a spokesperson for U.C. Berkeley told NBC News on Friday that the university has "no record of graduation or attendance" for a person named Nima Momeni.

Maybe due to attention bias, but feel this sort of thing is happening more and more, despite the fact it should be harder as our data becomes ubiquitous.

Nobody checks references, especially if they’ve already decided.

I get that this story was huge and topical and all, but now that it’s clear that there are no culture war points to be won by either side, maybe day to day trial updates don’t belong on HN?

Let’s just hope that the killer is brought to justice and Bob’s loved ones can return to some semblance of normalcy after this tragic event.

Whilst that’s true, I feel the balance does need to be addressed. When I simply pointed out on the first thread that it could have been by someone he knew I was downvoted https://news.ycombinator.com/reply?id=35450932&goto=threads%...

I agree. About all I can suggest is flagging it and moving on. :)

Or gently nudging people not to comment on it, so it naturally floats down the algorithm…
